Stand-up Comedy classes

So you’ve watched Last Comic Standing or Comedy Central and thought, "I can do that." Well, get off your can and get in class! Every comedian starts somewhere - you can start TODAY! Early registration is open and class space is limited.

All classes run EVERY Sunday and continue each month - on-going

  • Stand-Up Comedy Classes: 12 Noon - 2:30 PM
  • Cost is $100 per month - pay in person (CASH ONLY - NO CHECKS!) OR pay on-line (below)
  • Start/join anytime

How does it work?

Each class begins with a lesson that covers many of the key points that every comic should know. Then each student is given time onstage to share ideas with the class, try out new material, or just talk about their experiences. The teacher and the rest of the class will help you turn your ideas into solid stand-up material that will have them falling out of their seats!

Stand-Up Comedy Topics:

  • Your comedic point of view - Be original
  • Be emotional ; conflict, conflict, conflict
  • Exaggeration, white lies and embellishment
  • Pitfalls of trying out material on friends and family
  • The pause and how to use it - timing is everything
  • How to get material from current events
  • Judy Carter's four magic words
  • What's hack. What's not.
  • Upwriting - how to give it "zing"
  • Editing is essential - slash and burn!
  • Introduction to riffing
  • Writing your intro card for showcase emcee
  • Showcase etiquette
  • Developing call backs
  • Intensifying emotion on stage
  • Working with an attitude
  • In-class writing exercise
  • Physical comedy
  • Working with a partner on stage
  • How to read an audience
  • Joke repair; fixing stuff you thought you couldn't use
  • Emcee techniques part I
  • Emcee techniques part II
  • Improvisation exercise
  • Riffing your own material
  • Heckler hell

How much does it cost?

The cost is $100.00 for one month of classes. Each class is 2+ hours long. That's the best price for comedy instruction anywhere in Phoenix!

One on One with the "Pro's"

Each month, at the Comedy Spot Comedy Club stand-up classes, we feature a guest speaker. These are the real working pro's that not only headline at The Comedy Spot, but work around the country and the world performing stand-up comedy! They bring their years of experience to the table so our students can not only learn from their successes, but also their failures. They take the time to answer any questions the new or advanced comic can think of, and we are very proud to be able to make this a very exciting part of our curriculum.

How do I sign up?

Please click the button below to pay online. Cost of the class is $100.00 plus a $3.00 charge for processing when paying online. You can pay in person with CASH ONLY - (No personal, business or checks of any kind will be accepted!)
